For small Shopify brands, start with brand search plus either standard Shopping or a feed-only Performance Max campaign. Standard Shopping gives more control and clearer search term data; Performance Max can find more volume once you have conversion history. In both cases, the product feed quality matters more than the campaign type.
The difference
| Standard Shopping | Performance Max | |
|---|---|---|
| Where ads show | Shopping results | Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display, Gmail, Maps |
| Control | High | Lower |
| Data visibility | Full search terms | Limited |
| Best for | Small budgets, learning | Scaling with conversion history |
Start with brand search
A small brand search campaign protects your name from competitors and captures people who saw your social ads and searched later.
Fix the feed first
- Titles with product type, key benefit, size or shade
- GTINs where available
- Accurate prices, availability and sale prices
- High-quality images on plain backgrounds
Measure properly
Import GA4 or Shopify purchases as the conversion, and judge Google on new customer orders and MER, not just Google-reported ROAS.

Frequently asked questions
Is Performance Max good for small businesses?
It can be, but it needs conversion data. Many small brands do better starting with standard Shopping and brand search, then testing Performance Max.
What budget do I need for Google Shopping?
Many small brands start at $20 to $40 a day, with a separate small budget for brand search.
Do I need a Merchant Center feed?
Yes. Both Shopping and Performance Max with products rely on a Google Merchant Center feed, which Shopify can sync.
